Local church offers VBS in August

Church alley in June is a moveable feast of summer fun activities for kids — with houses of worship up, down and around Hendricks Avenue offering fun-filled Vacation Bible School programs for neighborhood youth.

But one at least one church is waiting until the end of summer to offer its VBS program. St. Mark’s Lutheran Church will host its National Park Vacation Bible School Aug. 6-10. A musical is planned Aug. 11 and a related worship service is planned Aug. 12. The VBS is from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. each day.

Organizers are hoping to beat last year’s attendance record and draw more than 100 local children to the church’s 2012 VBS.

Having VBS at the end of the summer provides options for families seeking fun and inspiration during the “down time” just before school begins again.

Other churches are trying a similar approach, planning VBS in July and August as summer winds to a close. First Baptist Church Jacksonville is having its VBS, The Creation Quest, July 9-13 from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. It is open for children three years old to 8th grade. Lake Shore Baptist Church on Blanding Boulevard is planning a VBS titled, “Amazing Wonders,” July 1620 from 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. Murray Hill United Methodist Church VBS on College Street will be July 23-27 from 9 am. to 12 p.m. for students in Pre-K3 through the 5th grade.
