Episcopal rowers dominate invitational

Not a ripple spoiled the calm, clear waters of the Ortega River early in the morning Feb. 27 as crews from four schools competed in the 2016 Stanton River Bank Invitational.

Joining the Stanton River Bank Rowing Club in the competition were crews from The Bolles School, The Episcopal School of Jacksonville, and Hilton Head Island.

Episcopal rowers dominated the races winning eight of the 15 events including the women’s middle school four with coxswain; men’s junior varsity eight; women’s varsity eight; men’s middle school four with coxswain; women’s freshmen eight, women’s junior varsity four and the women’s varsity four.

Bolles rowers won four men’s races: third eight; varsity eight; freshman four and varsity four.

Utilizing rowers from Avondale, Riverside and Ortega, Stanton River Bank won three events: the women’s freshmen four, the women’s lightweight four, and the men’s junior varsity four. For Olivia Schueth, of Avondale, the day was particularly successful. Schueth and her teammates Danielle Forbes, Haille Taylor and Amelia Smith won the first race of the day for Stanton River Bank – the women’s freshmen four – providing the Bishop Kenny freshman with a victory in her first interscholastic competition.
