Decorating the Square

While the three kings brought gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh, a group of neighborhood volunteers bring the gift of adornment to the trio of bronze lions that sit regally in the center of San Marco Square.

The beloved lions that gaze at passersby and attract children and their pennies to its fountain, puts on its holiday best to celebrate the season’s festivities. This year they will shine even brighter thanks to recent renovations that illuminate the Square’s majestic centerpiece.

Suzanne Perritt, a member of The San Marco Garden Circle, which has donated the Christmas tree and decorations in Balis Park since 1990, is looking forward to the “delightful challenge” of bringing the spirit of the holidays to the newly enhanced park.

While the garden circle has been responsible for the towering tree in Balis Park that has been the backdrops of many a holiday card, Karen McCombs and Benita Boyd focus their attention and talents on the beautiful bronze sculpture.

Perritt describes them as “talented women who love San Marco and take pleasure in decorating the lions for Christmas.”

St. Nicholas resident Boyd, along with her brother, donated one of the three lions in memory of their parents. She called McCombs “the curator of all things that go on the lions.”
The decorations change every year, but McCombs and the other volunteers are particularly excited about the changes to the Square that will certainly enhance their efforts.
“We are looking forward to this year’s project, especially since we will have spotlights to show off our handiwork…the Square is going to look amazing,” said McCombs.
Boyd said the decorations are a holiday highlight.

“People love it; they bring their children to be photographed in front of it. It makes the Square festive. The lions should be adorned – they should be beautiful.”
