Ancelin to earn second black belt

Arik Ancelin of San Marco has no intention of letting his disability prevent him from his goal – to earn a second-degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do.

Although the 14-year-old dance major at LaVilla School for the Arts has Down syndrome, he said he intends to earn his second black belt in the sport during a special test Friday, March 31 at Watson Martial Arts in San Marco.

“Less than two percent of all students that start martial arts will achieve a black belt,” said Tae Kwon Do Master Jason Watson. “For a kid with no disabilities it’s a huge achievement. We have not changed our standards for Arik. He has done everything that all our other students have done,” he said.

Over the past six years, Ancelin has earned 10 under-belts, won a silver medal for his forms in an AAU-sanctioned Tae Kwon Do tournament, and earned his first black belt.
