Temporary closure for newly-renamed Bill Brinton Murray Hill Branch Library

The Jacksonville Public Library will temporarily suspend service at the Bill Brinton Murray Hill Branch Library starting Tuesday, Jan. 8 to upgrade the branch’s plumbing with new pipes and fixtures. The work is expected to take at least 10 days. Updates on reopening will be posted on the library’s website at www.jaxpubliclibrary.org and on the library’s social media channels.

The Board of Library Trustees approved the closure of the branch for the duration of these much-needed upgrades for the safety and comfort of customers, and to make this more cost-effective for taxpayers. Customers can pick up items on hold at the nearby Willowbranch Branch Library at 2875 Park St. until the Bill Brinton Murray Hill Branch reopens. Customers are encouraged to visit the Willowbranch Branch or any of the system’s 19 other locations throughout Jacksonville during this period, and can always take advantage of the library’s online resources at jaxpubliclibrary.org

About the Bill Brinton Murray Hill Branch Library

The 7,315-square-foot Murray Hill Branch Library, designed by architectural firm Hardwick & Lee, opened to the public in December 1968 as the last branch built pre-consolidation. The branch was renovated in 2004 as part of the Better Jacksonville Plan. Last year more than 71,000 people visited the branch to check out more than 77,000 items. Customers logged nearly 18,600 computer sessions at the library, which offers regularly-scheduled children’s storytimes, tech tutoring, and other programs. The library boasts an active group of volunteers, the Friends of Murray Hill Library, who help support the programs of the library.

At the 50th anniversary celebration of the branch’s opening, the branch was rededicated to the late past-president of the Friends of the Murray Hill Library, attorney and community activist, and son of the late library director Harry Brinton, William “Bill” Brinton. Following heavy budget cuts to the library system in 2010, Bill cofounded the Friends of the Murray Hill Library and cut the ribbon to reopen the library full time thanks to the support of the community. The branch was renamed the Bill Brinton Murray Hill Branch Library in his honor.
