Springfield is the most bikeable neighborhood in Jacksonville’s urban core, according to WalkScore.com. The Bike Score® is calculated using four equally weighted components including bike lanes, hills, destination and road connectivity, and bike commuting mode share.

“We are extremely excited that Springfield has been recognized as the most bike-friendly neighborhood in Jacksonville’s urban core,” Kelly Rich, Springfield Preservation and Revitalization Council (SPAR) executive director, said. “Quality of life is one of our central themes as an organization, and we continue to emphasize this by making our streets pedestrian and bicycle friendly. Doing so helps add value to our historic neighborhood’s fabric.”

SPAR recently received an AARP Community Challenge ‘Quick Action’ grant, which facilitated the installation of bicycle maintenance stations in Henry J. Klutho Park (at the intersection of Pearl Street and W. 3rd Street) and behind the SPAR Office at 1321 N. Main St.

SPAR has recently launched an Explore The Core campaign to showcase the area’s bikeability. This initiative encourages residents and visitors to use their bicycles when traveling within the urban core. SPAR will also be hosting bike socials throughout 2019, to further promote its status as a bike-friendly neighborhood. Residents and visitors can also explore the historic district on their own using a specially-designed route map created by SPAR.

“In addition to Springfield’s fantastic bicycle amenities, we are easily connected to our fellow urban core neighborhoods, giving residents access to a unique offering of various shops, restaurants, breweries and much more,” Rich said. “We’re excited to showcase this connectivity with our bike socials throughout 2019 that will include visiting locations such as the Riverside Arts Market and attending a Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp game.”
