Ruth N. Upson third-grader Jacob Stratton kicked off the holidays with a good, old-fashioned philanthropic project and the inspiration of his Elf on the Shelf, Chip.

Jacob has decided to help needy dogs and cats at the Jacksonville Humane Society by collecting supplies for them. He visited all the third-grade classes at the Murray Hill school, including his own – taught by Mrs. Sara Henry – and made a presentation to ask for donations. The response enabled him to collect food, toys, blankets, towels and paper goods to donate to the organization along with items he personally donated.

Jacob is the son of Upson teacher Mrs. Kimberly Spence and said his Elf on the Shelf, Chip, gave him the inspiration to help during the Christmas season. The assignment is right up his ally; he has a Gecko named Buddy, two hedgehogs named Pickles and Quilly and a dog named Luna at home.

He said the project will be on-going throughout the school year.
