Ten students at Bishop Kenny High School, representing eight troops in Jacksonville’s historic districts, have earned Eagle Scout rank in the Boy Scouts of America this school year.

One of the main pillars of attaining the rank of Eagle Scout is the planning, development and completion of a significant service project. As part of the project, the scout must successfully lead volunteers in helping to execute the project to successful completion. This year the young men had a wide array of projects from building score boards, to fencing baseball fields, refurbishing picnic tables and benches to building blueberry shelters for a school’s environmental program. All projects benefit the local community and are funded at no cost to the public with the donated labor from the young men.

The Eagle Scout rank was established in 1912 and represents a significant accomplishment and takes many years to achieve.

Representing Troop 5 were Aidan Webb and Kyle Hicks. Webb renovated two outdoor patios for Christ the King School, while Hicks refurbished the church pews from a church in Georgia to use in the gymnasium at Christ the King School.

Members of Troop 106 at Assumption School were Jack Wilkinson and Charlie Lawrence. Wilkinson paved a large area around a tree dedicated to a World War II veteran at Assumption, while Lawrence paved a pathway behind the sisters’ convent at Assumption School and built a grotto for a statue.

Meanwhile, Reedy Monahan, a member of Troop 2, built a fence at the NOL Little League field location at NAS Jacksonville, and his classmate, Jeremy Newman, a member of Troop 382 built a large, 8-foot by 36-foot shelter to grow blueberry plants for Christ the King School with wire mesh walls to keep animals out but the elements in.

Michael Richter, of Troop 473, landscaped a garden at St. Joseph Catholic Church and built a pamphlet holder. Nick Patin, of Troop 225, designed and built a custom scoreboard for the San Juan del Rio softball team. Jon Salek, of Troop 101, painted a room at a local church for use by an Ethiopian Church. Connor Murphy, of Troop 268, refurbished picnic tables at a local church, replacing and sanding all the new wood.
