Never mind that there are over 16,000 teams in more than 55 countries. For the San Jose [Catholic School] Trojans, it’s enough that there were 15 other teams competing in the RobotFest Tournament in Port Orange, FL early last month. The 6th and 7th grade San Jose Trojans meet in an afterschool program and at RobotFest were one of three teams given a bid to compete in regional competition.

The San Jose Trojans 8 are 8th graders in an advanced science class where they learn robotics. This team won a trophy in Lego Robotics for Core Values, which means they worked together as one unit graciously and with great team spirit.

“We are so proud of our Lego Robotics Club Team and our 8th Grade Advanced Science Team, for their accomplishments in the RobotFest Tournament,” said Jan Magiera, principal. “Our school is committed to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) education and providing our students with real-world hands-on application. Our students are enthusiastic about programs like our Lego teams.”

The FIRST® LEGO® League mandates that teams participate in at least one tournament to be eligible to advance to the Regional Tournament level; other tournaments prior to regionals are optional. Both teams will be entering the Osprey Challenge, on Saturday, Jan. 12, 2013 at UNF, and after that, heading for the regionals.

First year Lego Robotics Club team member Jimmy Dinsmore said this about the tournament, “I really loved the competition because we were able to interact with other teams from around the state, and compete head to head in the timed Lego Challenge.”

This is the second year for the San Jose Trojans to compete in FIRST Lego League and their first experience receiving a Regional Tournament bid.
