A new partnership between Ascension St. Vincent’s Riverside and the Florida State University College of Medicine has led to new residency and fellowship opportunities at the hospital.
Through a sponsorship between the two entities, a Family Medicine Residency Program and a Family Medicine-Obstetric Fellowship have been announced, bringing a new satellite clinic for obstetric patients.
“This partnership with Florida State University strengthens our ability to train family physicians who will serve Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia,” said Ascension Florida Chief Clinical Officer Dr. Syed Jafri. “We’re building on a 50-year legacy of training doctors who stay in our region to care for families.”
Indeed, according to statewide data, more than 75% of physicians who complete medical school and residency in the state remain in Florida to practice. This underscores the importance of expanding high-quality residency programs on a local level.
This new program, sponsored by FSU, is one of 28 Graduate Medical Education programs the university sponsors, encompassing 230 faculty and 330 residents and fellows, according to Alma Littles, M.D., Dean FSU College of Medicine.
This partnership has also enabled the Family Medicine Center to expand its impact with the new satellite office for obstetric patients opening in the Roger Main Building at Ascension St. Vincent’s Southside in May; it will be staffed by Family Medicine-Obstetric fellows as they learn to provide comprehensive obstetric care.
Hundreds of family physicians have completed the Ascension St. Vincent’s Riverside Family Medicine Residency program since it launched in 1973.
