USS ORLECK carries Jacksonville’s naval story into America’s 250th year

Docked along the St. Johns River, the USS ORLECK is hard to miss, especially when her lights reflect across the water against the Jacksonville skyline. She is more than a striking landmark. She is a reminder of service, sacrifice, and the generations of American sailors who stood watch in defense of freedom.

Commissioned in 1945 at the close of World War II, USS ORLECK (DD-886) went on to serve through the Korean and Vietnam Wars and supported recovery efforts tied to NASA’s Gemini IV mission. Today, this historic Gearing-class destroyer continues her mission in a new way, as a floating museum, living classroom, veterans’ tribute, and gathering place for the community.

As America prepares to celebrate its 250th anniversary, ORLECK offers Jacksonville something rare and meaningful: a chance to step directly into history. Visitors walk her steel decks, pass through narrow shipboard passageways, stand beneath her gun mounts, and begin to understand what life at sea required of the sailors who served aboard ships like her.

For younger visitors, the experience can be especially powerful. History is no longer just names, dates, and chapters in a book. Aboard ORLECK, students can see, touch, and feel the environment where sailors lived and worked. The ship brings lessons of courage, teamwork, discipline, and sacrifice to life in a way few classrooms can.

Under the stewardship of the Florida Historic Naval Ship Association, ORLECK has become an important part of Jacksonville’s military and waterfront identity. Her continued preservation is made possible by veterans, volunteers, donors, local businesses, and community supporters who believe this ship still has a story to tell.

Many of the volunteers who care for ORLECK are veterans themselves. Others are citizens who simply understand the importance of preserving America’s naval history for future generations. Together, they help keep the ship open, safe, active, and ready to welcome visitors from near and far.

ORLECK is also becoming a memorable setting for events with meaning. Military reenlistments, patriotic gatherings, civic events, Scout visits, student programs, and community celebrations bring new life to the ship while helping support her ongoing care. Every event held aboard ORLECK helps fund maintenance, restoration, education, and daily operations.

For businesses, organizations, and families, hosting an event aboard the ship is more than choosing a unique venue. It is a way to support a piece of American history right here in Jacksonville.

Donations are just as important. Historic ships require constant care. Steel must be maintained, exhibits must be developed, safety systems must be supported, and educational programs must continue to grow. ORLECK has survived war, decades of service, storms, relocation, and uncertainty. Her future now depends on the community she serves.

As America approaches 250 years of independence, USS ORLECK gives Jacksonville a powerful place to honor those who defended that freedom. She reminds us that liberty has always depended on ordinary Americans willing to do extraordinary things.

Step aboard. Host an event. Make a gift. Volunteer. Join the Florida Historic Naval Ship Association and help preserve history.

Still standing watch. Still telling her story. Still worth preserving. Will you stand with her?
