Record-breaker: Bolles swimmer to represent Singapore in Olympics

Bolles student Joseph Schooling, a rising junior at the school’s San Jose campus, is now the youngest athlete ever to be named Singapore’s Sportsman of the Year. The competitive swimmer will also represent his country in swimming during the 2012 Summer Olympics.

Final exams in Jacksonville, however, kept him from attending the ceremony in his native Singapore Schooling’s mother, May, accepted the award for him, according to a Bolles release. She told a Singapore newspaper that while Schooner will be putting pressure on himself to do well, she and his family will have to “keep him down to earth — he’s still a boy!”

The accolades and upcoming Olympic games are no surprise to those who have followed Schooling’s athletic accomplishments during the past year. At the 2011 Southeast Asia Games, Schooling won two gold medals, a silver medal and a bronze, setting Southeast Asian records for the 200-meter butterfly and 50-meter butterfly, a Bolles release shared.

In the 2012 Olympic games, Schooling will be swimming the 100- and 200-fly events. The 200-fly heats begin July 30. The 100-fly heats begin Aug. 2.

Schooling currently is the only swimmer from Singapore to achieve an automatic qualification for the 2012 games.
