Brooke Soulby, St. Nicholas, welcomes The Great Pumpkin with wide-open arms

Like Linus in It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown, neighborhood children eagerly flock to Southside United Methodist Church’s Pumpkin Patch in search of their very own Great Pumpkin.

For more than 15 years, families have come to the point between Hendricks Avenue and Old San Jose Road to take pictures amid the orange rows of rotund squash and purchase their own perfect pumpkin as part of their Halloween tradition.

Proceeds from the sale of pumpkins range between $20,000 and $30,000 and are used to support the church’s youth ministries.

Karen Moore, a San Marco resident and member of Southside United Methodist Church, said her children, Kailyn, age 13, and Trevor, age 15, have been to the Pumpkin Patch every year since they were babies. As members of SUMC’s youth group, they work at the pumpkin patch now.

“I remember coming here on school field trips,” said Kailyn, who now attends Landon Middle School. “It’s funny to see other kids coming here now. That’s what makes it so fun.”

Elizabeth Parola, a 5-year-old San Jose resident, said her favorite things about the pumpkins are getting to carve them. But when asked what her favorite thing about Halloween was, she answered, “The candy!”  Linus would disagree.
