A Call To Support Your Community

A Call To Support Your Community

It’s no secret the Coronavirus crisis and its economic fallout has thrown everyone for a loop. Many small businesses within Jacksonville’s historic districts are struggling. Unfortunately, a few may not survive. The same holds true for our beloved community nonprofits. These organizations do so much to help those in need. If they aren’t there to respond, the most vulnerable among us may lose a valuable safety net, and they also may not survive.

Small local businesses, of which The Resident is one, count on the faithful support of their neighbors. Restaurants, boutiques, family-run shops, realtors, hair salons, gymnasiums, schools, and personal service providers all require buoying up from their customers and community members during times of need.

Yet there are a few things our faithful readers can do to help.

Since mid-March, The Resident’s advertising sales have dropped precipitously, forcing us to limit the number of pages of coverage we can offer our readers. Since we rely strictly on advertising to cover the cost of printing, postage, and the salaries of our small staff, we are asking readers to consider assisting us by purchasing advertisements or contributing donations, as an expression of gratitude for the paper.

Supporting local businesses, nonprofits and other organizations by underwriting their advertising helps to relay their messages as they reschedule and adapt to this new reality. It is also possible to purchase advertising space in memory of a loved one, to celebrate family, or for clubs, schools, or neighborhood events, or to simply to tell someone you love them. Buying advertising space to relay nearly any message is a show of endorsement for community journalism. The Resident will even supply ad design services for free, if you will underwrite the ad space.

Patronizing our faithful advertisers is another way to support The Resident. They are our neighbors and business partners – our lifeline – and we so appreciate them sticking with us through this economic downturn.

Although the next few months promise to be difficult, we know that with your support, we will all come out on the other side of this pandemic, together, and stronger than ever.
