Constellation FURYK & FRIENDS golf tournament wraps up year two

Another year is in the books, as the second year of the Constellation FURYK & FRIENDS presented by Circle K, PGA TOUR Champions event crowned its victor. The tournament ended with Steve Stricker taking the title after shooting a three-round, 14 under par tournament total, closing out the local tournament hosted by the Timuquana Country Club, the week of Oct 2-8th.

Stricker took home a two-stroke victory over Harrison Frazar, as he continued his hot streak during a comeback year that’s been an uphill battle following a six-month ailment and pause from tournament play. He finished three strokes ahead of tournament host Jim Furyk, who had played alongside Stricker for the final grouping at while closing out the final day on the course.

Champions for Giving in North Florida

Outside of the greens and fairways, the tournament has continued to draw conscientious patrons, sponsors and ticket purchasers to the course. With a goal to break another million-dollar donation record for charitable organizations to dole out in North Florida, the fundraising impacts can be felt rippling throughout the nonprofit sector annually.

Last year, the fundraising tally was $1.17 million raised in charitable donations, which funded grants and other programs for the St. Johns Rivekeeper to the MaliVai Washington Youth Foundation, The First Tee, Blessings in a Backpack, Guardian Catholic Schools, Family Support Services or FSS, and Wolfson Children’s Hospital, to name a few. At the bars and refreshment stands, tips rolled in from a generous fan base during the week of activities surrounding the tournament. This year, the Celebrity Challenge for Charity added an extra push for charitable fundraising, as former Jaguars Tony Boselli and Josh Scobee, who went head-to-head with former Steelers Ben Roethlisberger and Jerome Bettis, resulted in $100,000 going to Blessing in a Backpack and Habitat for Humanity, each player’s personal charities also benefitted.

Guest appearances of note

A power couple made an appearance this year, as Jack Nicklaus “The Golden Bear” and his wife Barbara made it to the tournament grounds as part of their quest to raise money for children’s hospitals. The Nicklaus’ appearance kicked off the Champions Breakfast held Oct. 7, immediately followed by the first tee shot of the tournament by local teen, Jack Jones.

Jones, a local 14-year-old, was treated at Wolfson Children’s Hospital following a soccer injury back in early 2021. An MRI revealed a large congenital arachnoid cyst in his brain, he underwent surgery and has successfully recovered. Nicklaus stepped up to christen the tournament behind the young man, teeing off in honor of children battling life-threatening conditions.
