Demolition has begun at the shuttered Fairfax service station on the corner of Herschel Street and San Juan Avenue to make way for a new neighborhood seafood restaurant.

Three years in the making, Duval Fish Company is a new concept from the same duo behind the Eat Happy Jax food truck and co-owner Tito Quinones said it will be a “neighborhood spot.”

“We want an old Florida vibe about the place, but I also want you to get a whole roasted snapper,” Quinones said.

According to Dasher Hurst Architects, the project’s architecture firm, the restaurant’s interior design took inspiration from “vintage boats and nautical themes.” A project summary describes the design as “offer[ing] a perfect balance between honoring the history of the gas station and introducing a fresh, contemporary twist suited to a dynamic, coastal city.”

The City of Jacksonville has issued a trio of building permits for the Duval Fish Company to replace the shuttered service station at 4323 Herschel Street. According to the permits, the project involves the adaptive reuse and renovation of the existing structure along with two additional buildings and enclosures for a dumpster and generator.

Quinones said he anticipates construction to take approximately nine months. The design team for this project also includes Carlton Construction, Inc.
