Business Profile

In 1921, Albert Hugo arrived in Jacksonville, intending only a layover on his way farther south. But as the landscape grew wilder and more remote, the German-trained tapezierer – skilled in paper hanging, cabinet-making, upholstery and fine decorative crafts – decided that civilization suited him better. He returned to Jacksonville and made it his permanent home.
Albert and his wife, Euna, a talented local hatmaker, formed a natural creative partnership: He designed interiors and built and upholstered custom furniture, while she fashioned elaborate window treatments for many of the city’s most prominent families. The couple established their first workspace in the dock house of Arthur and Ninah Cummer’s Riverside estate, trading their furnishings expertise for room to build what would become Albert Hugo & Associates.
Their clientele soon expanded to include notable families such as Alfred and Jessie duPont at Epping Forest. As the business grew, it relocated in 1947 to Philips Highway, where it continues to serve Jacksonville generations later.

A Legacy of Leadership
When Hugo’s moved to Philips Highway, it wasn’t just a change of address; it was a quiet act of foresight. What was then a practical, postwar corridor for light industry and growing commerce became the long-term home where the company could stretch, build and evolve alongside Jacksonville itself.
From that location, Hugo’s expanded beyond its early roots in upholstery and window treatments into a full-spectrum design, fabrication and installation operation, serving both residential and commercial clients with an uncommon blend of craft and scale.
Decades later, Philips Highway has emerged as Jacksonville’s Design Corridor – a hub for high-end design, build and installation services – and Hugo’s finds itself not as a newcomer, but as one of the anchors that helped define what the corridor could become: a place where skilled hands, serious materials and long relationships matter, and where a family business has quietly shaped interiors for generations without ever needing to chase trends.
From its earliest years, Hugo’s Interiors built a reputation not just in Jacksonville homes but also in commercial spaces.

By mid-century, the firm’s in-house design team and artisans were creating custom upholstery, millwork and interior finishes for both residential clients and businesses. Institutions like Barnett Bank – Florida’s largest commercial bank for much of the 20th century, with deep ties to Jacksonville’s civic and architectural heritage – helped establish a local visual culture in which interior specialists were sought for high-profile public and corporate interiors.
Four Generations with a Singular Vision
Hugo’s has remained a family-led company dedicated to exceptional furniture, thoughtful design and enduring quality. What began with founder Albert Hugo has grown into a tradition carried forward by four generations of the same family.
Leadership passed from Albert to his son Edward, then to Edward’s son Richard, and today to Richard’s children – Mathew, Jennie and Paul – continuing the values that have guided Hugo’s for more than a century: integrity in craftsmanship, respect for tradition and a deep commitment to the clients who welcome our work into their homes.

While styles evolve and new generations discover Hugo’s, the heart of the company remains the same: furniture thoughtfully made, carefully chosen and meant to live beautifully in a home for years to come.
Since 1921, Hugo’s has built upholstered furniture in our own workrooms. Not on a production line, but by hand, by skilled artisans and tailored to each client. The result is furniture meant to endure; true heirloom pieces, designed to live beautifully in a home for generations.

From time to time – quite often, in fact – we welcome back a piece originally crafted by a previous generation of Hugo’s artisans, entrusted to us again for restoration or reupholstery. Just as often, families return to add another piece to their home or to begin a collection for the next generation.
That is the promise of Hugo’s: lasting quality, exceptional comfort and value that only grows with time.
